It’s probably been awhile since you’ve picked up a pencil or brush so I’ve collected some apps that’ll help you get back in the groove of creating again.

To transition from your daily office life, why not start by making art of something you’re used to: forms. With Jenn Schiffer’s “makecheckboxart” project, inspired by the fact that forms are the worst, you can let your imagination run wild. You’ll likely never look at another checkbox the same way again.

Here’s the “etch-a-sketch” app from Kate Preston which will give you the truly foundational building blocks that a visual artist needs. For example, first I made this sick castle drawing and now I’m ready to take Picasso himself. No better way to start drawing then with perfectly straight lines. But we’re just getting the creative juices flowing.


Now that you’ve mastered the art of drawing one infinite line, we can get a little more complex. With “magic-sketchpad”, from Monica Dinculescu, you can draw all sorts of things — with multiple lines. And don’t worry, if you’re thinking “wait, but I don’t know how to draw a chair,” that’s where the real magic comes in. Just draw the beginning of your chair and Magic Sketchpad will draw the rest for you.


Speaking of creating cool images with very little work, here’s “orbitalpaint.” Created by José Blanco Perales, Orbital Paint is an “experimental drawing web app that uses particles and attractors” to create cool patterns, and you can get a wide variety of cool images just by adjusting a few settings. If you don’t fully understand what each setting does, that’s fine, no one understands art anyway.

Apps to inspire the great artist in you

The Congress Tracker app by Jason Crane searches the ProPublica Congress API for bills and statements related to gun violence. At a glance, it shows us how active Congress is on the issue as well as what elected officials are doing and saying. It’s a great starting point for exploring other questions related to the subject and, in fact, most Glitch apps that include public data operate this way. We’ll explain.

Let’s say you want to know the answer to an important policy question: what has Congress done to address gun violence since 2016? You could use this same data to build a data visualization app by plotting the number of related bills and statements over time. Our Developer Advocate Lyzi Diamond has created a data visualization starter using Chart.js that’s perfect for getting a project like this started.

You can use Glitch to build tools to make data more accessible. It’s especially useful to democratize public access to large datasets. For example, we teamed up with Data for Progress to make polling data from their Presidential Primary First Debate Survey searchable across demographics. The app is powered by Datasette, a handy tool for turning any CSV into an API.

Once you’ve built something awesome with your data, you can embed it almost anywhere, including on Medium, Wordpress, and other big publishing platforms. Take The Colorado Sun's Timeline project, for example. A Glitch app displays data from all Colorado death penalty cases since 1979. Curious readers can search and filter the data based on demographics and case status, wherever the app is embedded. And as is the case with all Glitch apps, the code powering the app is completely transparent.

If you’ve already identified a project you like, you can “remix” it to get your own copy that can run in any web browser. You get to start from a working example when building your own project, for free. And guess what else? The Data for Progress app mentioned earlier is actually a remix of our Stack Overflow Public Data app.

How data journalism is powered by Glitch

We may not yet be able to modify our cities at the click of a button. But in the 30 years since SimCity first introduced players to the promise of click-and-create cities, the technology available to urbanists has transformed dramatically. Today, gamers and city officials have access to tools which increasingly resemble the kind of gods-eye view that made SimCity so addictive, in the process influencing physical space in new and unforeseen ways.

SimCity, which celebrates its 30th anniversary release on IBM this month, was the brainchild of Will Wright, who initially developed the game as a level creator. Soon, he discovered that building new spaces was more fun than ‘Raid on Bungeling Bay,’ the point-and-shoot game he was originally developing, in the process spawning a new genre of video games (and countless spinoffs and sequels).

Over their lifetime, SimCity games have become increasingly complex, but they remain rooted in several fundamental goals. In an interview for the game’s 25th anniversary, Wright described his creations as “possibility spaces” that melded entertainment and education, as he argued: “I think SimCity was just a simple example that for a lot of people started to remove the wall between the two.”

As an educational vehicle, the game certainly influenced one obvious audience: today’s city planners. In a Los Angeles Times feature from earlier this year, planners documented the game’s impact on their future careers, helping them recognize the possibility of taking the skills and practices honed virtually and applying them to the real world. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without ‘SimCity,’” one transportation official said.

Cities are, of course, complex systems, with definitions of “success” largely dependent upon the beholder. But the SimCity franchise has largely modeled success in terms of capitalist development through unlimited growth. In its most extreme form, it’s a dystopian nightmare: Even as he used SimCity 3000 to build a city of 6 million without “water pollution, traffic, or crime,” architecture student Vincent Ocasla’s “Magnasanti” project, which took years to plan and execute, nonetheless keeps its virtual population in near-captivity, doomed to die by the age of 55. As The Outline described the project: “It’s a dense and brutal world, perfectly efficient and optimized, with no considerations for the human lives within it.”

Wright was himself inspired by the work of electrical engineer Jay Forrester, whose book Urban Dynamics studied cities as lively systems of interrelated variables shaping and reshaping one another. As Kevin Baker documented in Logic Magazine, the implications of Forrester’s thinking were troubling. With an emphasis on fostering a healthy business climate, and a raft of negative assumptions about low-income residents, Forrester’s predictions influenced the policy of “benign neglect” that pushed the Nixon administration to cut social services to poor city dwellers in the late sixties.

Moreover, Forrester’s simulated city was a complete abstraction: “There were no neighborhoods, no parks, no roads, no suburbs, and no racial or ethnic conflicts.” Yet the model proved useful to Wright’s game design, with its supposed distillation of city change down to “150 equations and 200 parameters” a way of making SimCity possible. Over time, the game has further reflected real-life cities, while still maintaining assumptions about how cities function that now feel outdated.

A 2013 revision introduced homelessness into the game; in response, players flooded forums with questions on how to banish the virtual dispossessed from their cities, in many ways mirroring real-life rhetoric towards the housing-insecure. Even as later editions have sought to more accurately reflect the real world, issues with the game’s approach remain: As argued in a piece called “SimCity and Black Box Simulations,” “the underlying game mechanics of SimCity are founded on baseline assumptions that cannot be changed by the player.” As SimCities games reject things like public transit and mixed-use development, it becomes clear that fresh visions for today’s cities remain lacking within the franchise.

In recent years, independent game developers have responded directly to these faulty assumptions. One such developer is Paolo Pedercini, whose company Molleindustria has produced a series of games which respond to the pressures of the Antrophocene and overdevelopment on city spaces. In a 2017 talk called “SimCities and SimCrises,” Pedercini argued that SimCity “is shaping the way a lot of people understand or misunderstand city planning.” Other projects, such as 2017’s “Block’hood,” aim to give players a different window into contemporary urban planning, centering concerns of “ecology, interdependence and decay” as guiding principles of city design. Despite its flaws, the SimCity remains influential on city planning and how we imagine it.

“I do think city planning games can empower people. I believe they can be integrated in the democratic process,” Pedercini argued in his talk. “But we need to take precautions, we need to adopt strategies that address the problematic aspects of city games.”

If building roads, trains and highways out of nothing remains a power best left to a game that “makes mayors out of middle schoolers,” as Doug Bierend described SimCity, that doesn’t mean that the principles of overarching control aren’t bleeding into contemporary urban planning. Largely thanks to the increasing prevalence of smartphones and other computing devices embedded in our cities, companies are developing programs which increasingly mimic the game itself. While their ability to influence the physical world remains limited, a growth in technologies like self-driving vehicles may herald a future in which cities can redirect traffic from above, all in conformance with the “best” outcomes as determined in the city’s “digital twin.”

The most obvious version of this technology is Replica, developed as part of Sidewalk Labs, a city design project under the Alphabet umbrella. The company describes its technology as “A Virtual World With Real Qualities,” giving planners up-to-date access to detailed information about transit use, traffic patterns, and other mobility questions. The company is able to deliver such detailed data by building a “travel behavior model” drawn from approximately five percent of the population. By using transit searches and GPS data, the company produces a “synthetic” population meant to model the living, breathing humans it’s drawn from, allowing planners to test assumptions and understand city patterns in detail. The result? According to the company, “When you combine travel behavior models with a representative population, you can confidently replicate trip patterns across a city or metro area.”

The implications of such technology are manifold. For urban planners who have begun using Replica in cities like Kansas City, the program introduces a level of complexity and fine-grain analysis previously unavailable. (As one planner told Sidewalk Labs: “The more detail you give me, the more questions I can answer.”) But while Sidewalk promises that people’s information has been de-identified before being placed into its simulation, experts warn that any point-to-point travel data is vulnerable to reidentification, especially with Google unable to confirm the exact source of many of its location data sources.

While Replica gives planners a virtual sandbox to contemplate changes to traffic patterns or transit systems, other advances in mobility technology may soon allow centralized decisionmakers to literally reroute city traffic from afar. In a feature for CityLab, Laura Bliss documented the rise of “digital twin” technology currently being developed by IBM, Microsoft, Google, and others. According to Bliss, officials from 13 major US have convened to discuss the adoption of protocols produced by the Open Mobility Foundation, a new nonprofit building digital infrastructure to follow physical space. The technology “would allow local governments to both trace the movements of individual vehicles, and control them to some extent.”

It’s an outcome which uncannily embodies a tagline for SimCity 2000: “If this game was any more realistic, it’d be illegal to turn it off!”

SimCity and “possibility spaces”: reshaping how we build the worlds around us

This is a question with many answers, but only one of them is scientifically correct: videos of famous vloggers apologizing. Not only is it an art, but the sheer amount of video apologies and what comes off as insincerity almost makes the output look generative. We love generative art here at Glitch!

For the August show of Internet Explorers, I was invited to present my expertise of the month’s theme, Youtube. As I have been cursed with being an extremely funny and talented web developer, it only made sense to build a game on Glitch to help myself and others learn what it is like to be a famous vlogger who has to apologize for something. Welcome to Apology Hero, the first ever apologizing sim.

Apology Hero is a celebrity-inspired apology generator (with Jenn Schiffer)

In Apology Hero, you’re a vlogger who has to apologize for something. As you read off an apology, karaoke-style, the game shows emotions that you have to express. I’m using Tensorflow.js and face-api.js (cw: Big Bang Theory) to, with players permission, detect the players face and see if the emotion they are expressing matches what the game is telling them to express. If you can keep up with the wide range of emotions of an apology video, you get a high score!

Machine learning is cool, but you know what’s cooler? Writing your own apologies! Apology Hero comes pre-bundled with a couple of apologies written collaboratively by the humans and machines of Botnik Studios, but you can add your own by remixing Apology Hero on Glitch and then updating the apologies in the config/apologies folder in the editor, or adding your own files.

Once you’re settled with your options for apologies, you can do what I did and bring your entire company to a standstill one afternoon to play!

As the 2020 Democratic Primary approaches, progressive candidates, engaged voters, and the media are deepening their understanding of how Americans think about the issues currently facing the country and our world. Through research and polling, we are learning that the “way Americans think” as defined by conventional wisdom may no longer reflect our reality, particularly when it comes to issues like climate change, immigration, and economic inequality.

In July of this year, YouGov Blue conducted the Presidential Primary First Debate Survey on behalf of Data for Progress, which opened the door to public opinions on these issues. In order to provide more access to the results, here at Glitch we made a visualization tool to explore responses to each question based on a set of demographic filters. And the best part is that it’s totally customizable!

The app allows you to see the results for individual questions in the poll and provides several demographic filters to narrow down the data based on ethnicity, gender, ideology, age, and education level. As an example, here is the data for the question, “What is your party preference?” filtered to only include respondents who identify as Hispanic and Female:

After selecting filters, the app shows the question’s response breakdown for both the selected group and the total responses, as well as the number of responses to that question that match the filter conditions. By drilling down into the data, we can see that based on the respondents of this study, folks who identify as Hispanic and Female are more likely to also identify with the Democratic party than the larger group.

The data that powers this project lives in a separate app using a tool called Datasette. Datasette provides data journalists with a web application for exploring and querying large sets of data, and includes convenient tools for converting CSV files into a SQLite database. To start building this app, we put all of the survey response data into Datasette so it could be queried -- you can see that project here.

Having the data in Datasette enables us to query the data using SQL (Structured Query Language), a common language for interacting with databases. This makes the communication between the two apps fairly straightforward: When you create a filter in the visualization tool, the app translates that filter to a SQL query and sends it to the Datasette app. The Datasette app then uses that SQL query to retrieve a subset of the data based on the filters and returns that data to the visualization app, where it is displayed.

We made this app to show what is possible in terms of exploring survey data, but our example is not a comprehensive report of every response to the Presidential Primary Debate First Survey. If you’re interested in exploring the data beyond what’s in our app, you’re in luck! You can create your own version of this project focused on the questions and demographic information that are most important to you.

First of all, remix this app! Remixing will create your own copy of the app that is unique to you -- any changes you make will only apply to your version. Make sure you change the description in your version so you remember what the app does when you're looking at it later.

Once you have your own version of the app, you can start making changes.

Discord Bots Starter Kit: Making your first bot, easy

Have you ever attended a fascinating live interview at a conference or other event and wished there was a way to share great questions with the host?

We built a tool so you could do just that, and Glitch CEO Anil Dash tested it while he interviewed Mindy Kaling at Twilio's SIGNAL conference.

We received 194 questions from the audience and Anil ended up asking Mindy about ten percent during the hour-long keynote interview.

Here’s how we did it and how you can use our free Glitch app to collect questions at your next event, too.

Conceptualizing the app: a brief overview

The interview took place on stage while Anil showcased how the Twilio API works, creating an engaging experience for the audience and for Mindy. We often work with partners to develop apps that help them engage in meaningful conversations with their communities or showcase their APIs.

We wanted to build an interview-style questions and answers app that lets hosts solicit live questions from the audience without compromising user privacy. We baked in a human curation element to control for harassment, et voilà! You have an app that lets you engage with hundreds of people:

The next step: pitching our idea to Twilio.

The Solutions Engineering team often has to move quickly on projects, so we always want to provide enough information to describe the project without getting too mired in technical details to avoid unpleasant surprises and get all questions answered before a single line of code is written.

We agreed on an app that presented a landing page explaining how to send in questions for Mindy, an administrator area where incoming questions could be curated, and a presenter area that Anil would use onstage. We knew that limited time meant only a certain number of questions could be asked, so Glitch and Twilio staff would log in to the admin area, select which questions to feature, and send them to the “presenter” section of the app.

Twilio approved the idea, and off to work we went!

We primarily leveraged Twilio’s Programmable SMS service, but we also included a form on the landing page — some users might not have a roaming plan that includes text messages at a reasonable cost, so we wanted to ensure there was an alternate way of submitting a question.

(Programmable SMS is a paid service by Twilio. Signing up for a new account will get you US $10 in credit. Your phone number will cost $1/month, and each SMS sent or received in the US costs $0.0075 — for our purposes, that $10 will go a long way.)

We had a total of about four days to build and test this project. That’s a short timeline, but by scoping the work the way we had, it was possible!

The app is a Node.js app that can be broken down into three areas.

Going to the live Glitch app gives users instructions on how to send in questions for the keynote. It’s a basic HTML page with a single-input form to send in questions. In the lead up to the keynote, the FlipDown library was used to generate a countdown.

The form sends the submitted question to the app’s back-end server, which returns a success or error message.

A big ol' text input on the internet for submitting content to a live event can be a little ... scary. Beyond being a vector for abuse, it’s possible someone accidentally submits a password or other sensitive information. We decided against displaying questions live as they came in. Instead, they’re fetched and displayed at a password-protected /admin page. On this page, a teammate can click/tap a question that they’d like to send to the interviewer.

The interviewer accesses this subset of questions at a different /curated page, which is also password-protected.

The back end of the app consists of two files: an Express server in server.js, and the methods for storing, fetching, and manipulating submitted questions in storageController.js. Let’s look at the key features of each:

server.js handles the back-and-forth between the app and your browser. It’s set up to parse incoming questions and to always use secure HTTPS connections, and then it sets up the GET and POST endpoints. GET endpoints fetch data from the server, and POST endpoints provide a place to send data.

We serve the three pages mentioned in the front end description:

We also set up a /questions endpoint, which is where the admin and presenter pages GET the list of submitted questions. This endpoint is what’s password-protected on those pages.

There are also three POST endpoints for submitting data:

we set up /sms to listen for questions being submitted via Twilio’s Programmable SMS service

we set up /form to listen for questions being submitted via the form on the landing page

we set up /toggleSelection to listen for staff selecting (or un-selecting) a question on the admin page

storageController.js, on the other hand, is what handles the back-and-forth between server.js and the data file where the questions are stored, using three methods:

getQuestionList fetches the list of questions from the data file

addQuestion adds a question to the end of the data file

toggleSelection changes the selected property of a given question in the data file

So how does all this work together? When you send an SMS or use the form to submit a question, that question gets added to the end of the data file with a selected value of false. When a teammate goes to the admin page, they log in and get the list of all questions in the data file; if they tap or click on a question in the list, it toggles the selected property of that specific question.

On the other hand, when the interviewer goes to the curated page, they log in and get a subset of all the questions in the data file — specifically, they only see the questions where the selected property is true.

We built the form-based functionality first so that we could test the back end independently of what the Twilio service might require. However, we also stubbed out what the /sms endpoint would look like, using this excellent guide from Twilio.

The form-based approach pretty much copies this — including returning TwiML (Twilio’s extension of XML) rather than, say, JSON. Eagle-eyed readers will see that the only difference between the /sms and /form endpoints is the twilio.webhook() middleware. This validates incoming requests to make sure that incoming requests are coming from Twilio by checking them against the TWILIO_AUTH_TOKEN value in the .env file (which we get from our Twilio developer account). Then it’s just a matter of telling Twilio where to send SMS messages.

As mentioned in Twilio’s guide, this is done by setting up webhooks (in the Twilio Cloud Console’s “Active Numbers” area, choose a phone number and look under ). Under “a message comes in” we set up a webhook pointing to the /sms endpoint (using HTTP POST). And in case that fails, we set another webhook pointing to the /form endpoint (again using HTTP POST). This is why we set up the form handling logic to return TwiML. Our webpage can parse the response as XML, but Twilio can also use this to reply to an incoming text message, too. We’ve already got that endpoint open to the world via the form, so using it here as a fallback is convenient.

By leveraging the Twilio Programmable SMS API, we were able to very quickly build an app that creates an exciting and engaging live experience.

Working on a very short deadline meant that we had to make some design tradeoffs to reduce complexity, but the ease of integration of the API — as well as Glitch’s zero-setup development environment and near-instant feedback loop for rapid iteration — allowed us to go from new project to live app in no time flat.

How we built an app for crowdsourcing questions for interviews

One of the most anticipated additions to iOS 13 is Shortcuts, a feature that makes a countless number of more complicated tasks a lot easier. We’re especially excited about Shortcuts because we love making custom apps at Glitch.

The Shortcuts feature is now part of the default suite of apps on every iOS device (it’s also completely integrated with Siri). Using Shortcuts can be as simple as pulling up a map of your commute but Shortcuts can use web services to extend their capabilities. And the best place to roll your own web service is Glitch!

We’ve built a couple of Glitch apps that integrate with Shortcuts – to learn more about our current apps, or to build your own, just keep reading.

In a few taps, for example, your phone can take five pictures and turn them into a gif. There’s a universe of possibilities out there. Where should you start?

Determine there is an API you want to use or if you want to build your own. If you can think of it, there is (probably) an API for it: nutrition, movies, Reddit. Some APIs allow you to get interesting data, while others allow more advanced functionality like creating or editing content. You can build your own APIs on Glitch, too, if that’s your thing. Last year we showed you a simple Shortcut that used Glitch to work with data about Pokemon types from the Pokemon API. This year, we made a few examples to show how to post data to an API.

The magic is in Shortcuts Actions, which are the building blocks of all Shortcuts. Specifically the "get contents of URL" Action. The name only hints at what it can do: it allows you to send data anywhere on the web, and that’s key for communication with APIs. Along with it comes increased integration with many apps and Siri.

Here’s a quick look at two apps we built with Shortcuts:

Tell Siri what text you’d like on the background and the Glitch Background Maker will create a cute background with the text on it. Cats, dogs, palm trees? You never know what you’ll get. And it’s easy to modify if you want to remix.
