If you’re teaching a class, running a hackathon, or just showing a friend how to code, we recently wrote about a collection of free and open learning resources, including starter kits, zines, and more! But we wanted to go beyond the code, and hear just how teachers are using Glitch in the classroom and what types of apps they’re working on.

“I first discovered Glitch through an A-frame tutorial,” says Eric Eisaman, a high school teacher at Edward Little HS in Auburn, ME. “I was prompted to remix a project which accompanied an article I was reading at the time.”

It’s fascinating how the discovery of a new piece of information can encourage you to learn more. “At some point over the following weeks, I investigated [Glitch] further and shared the article and project with my students, and nearly all the students remixed the project on their own. That was just the loud, clamoring cymbal for me to just get out there and be more serious about integrating [Glitch] into the classroom.”

With a shared, collaborative editor, the ability to remix projects, and an easy way to ask for help if you get stuck, Glitch is a powerful tool to use for teaching all types of coding concepts. And remixing from a working example is a great way to start students off by getting them straight into the code. Rather than beginning with all of the theory first, getting them using code to make something fun is a useful hook that can motivate students to learn the theory they need later.

Using Starter Projects to Teach All Abilities

Daniel Carter, assistant professor of digital media at Texas State University uses “Glitch almost like a live improvisation environment in my classes. I set up a really basic demo or really basic web template, and then I just use it as a space where we can all come together”.

It can be tough finding the right level to pitch a whole class. But by creating flexible starter projects you can cater to all coding experience levels and abilities.

“I’ll literally go around the classroom and have each student either type code or explain to me what the code is doing, and I like that because I can be really flexible, and I can change what I’m asking students to do based on what they need reinforced or based on ideas they have,” says Carter.

He isn’t the only one using starter projects. Kelly Lougheed, a middle and high school computer science teacher in Los Angeles says “oftentimes, I create starter projects and have students remix them so that they can focus on learning or reinforcing the salient concepts (rather than setting up their HTML/CSS/JS templates).”

We know many teachers have to be their own IT support. Using Glitch means you don’t have to worry about installing or updating anything, as everything runs in the browser. “Whether I was teaching basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or frameworks like A-Frame, Glitch was an easy way to expedite the file setup process and have students immediately see their work live on the internet,” Lougheed adds.

Justin Riley, a computer science teacher at Hilliard Bradley High School in Columbus, OH, found a complete use for Glitch across all his classes.

“Last year, I used [Glitch] in my game design class, my web design class…even my introductory level programming course. My students and I just loved how easy it was to work collaboratively, how easy it was to work with p5.js and Node. We really liked following along The Coding Train tutorials on YouTube, and being able to recreate the p5.js activities and games in Glitch.”

Re-using existing resources is a smart way of reducing the work involved in creating compelling examples for students to work from. You can identify the hit videos and tutorials and use that to inform your choices, along side other factors like technology used and difficulty level etc.

Keeping Students (and Teachers!) On Track

“I’ve noticed that if we don’t have that environment where we can all watch each other coding, they just kind of scatter really quickly. But if we’re in Glitch, they all tend to stay engaged and they’re better able to keep up and respond to what we’re doing,” says Carter. The Glitch editor is collaborative, so you can pair with students on code in a workshop, or they can watch you coding live.

But it’s not just students who can be helped by Glitch. Prof. Greg McVerry of Southern Connecticut State University, is even using Glitch to help empower fellow instructors.

“My goal is to create resources to help educators that want to move into open educational resources and open pedagogy. Instead of having us remix all these crazy classes in LMS, let’s just use plain HTML as much as we can and keep our websites and our instructions simple and remixable and shareable.”

So that’s how educators are using Glitch, but what are they all building? With each of these educators using Glitch in different ways in their classrooms, we were curious to see the projects their students have created.

“Right now, [my students] are doing trading cards of people on the open Web. It’s just a tiny bit of CSS animation to flip the cards. They’re also doing a meme generator. I try to think about the projects that will scaffold folks into learning HTML a bit. I’m not building any apps with my students yet; we’re just pretty much using the website and the HTML editors,” says McVerry.

“I actually taught summer IoT camp for middle-schoolers, and I had integrated Glitch there. Students made different renditions of a controller, an administrative application for an IoT network,” says Eric. According to him, students also asked him to teach multi-player game design during the camp! He was hesitant at first, but by the end of the day, he decided to squeeze in a quick lesson.

“I spun up a quick multi-player demo in Glitch, using A-frame, to give them a context to ask questions. As soon as I spun up that demo at Glitch, it was just like, boom, boom, a bunch of different possibilities that were going on in these students’ heads. So I’m currently working with students on that project, and they’re doing remixes of it and giving feedback to each other, instruction to each other. And that’s where I think things are most effective, when students are teaching each other.”

Games are a fun way to get folks into coding. But bots are popular too, as Lougheed describes. “During one lesson, I had students create Twitter bots using the Node.js starter code and instructions on Glitch”. “This activity followed a lesson where students used JavaScript arrays and Math.random() to make a Magic 8 Ball website. It was a natural extension for them to use the same JavaScript techniques to make their Twitter bot produce a random tweet, just like the Magic 8 Ball generated a random response.”

“At first, I wasn’t sure if Glitch was going to work for the classroom because of everything being public by default and easy to share. But this ended up being awesome. This was a feature, not a bug,” adds Riley.

We've partnered with Color of Change on an online hackathon called #Remix4Change. The aim is simple: empower Black voters by turning technology into power. Color of Change has built an app that displays a list of your local representatives, along with current bills in your state categorized by bail, police, prison, or discrimination - all issues with long term effects on some of the lives of people in your community.

NBC's  is a smash-hit comedy. It's spawned some memorable characters and quotes, and it's beloved by critics and fans all over the world.

Klaudia Rozgonyiova (@EffingKay), a software developer at the BBC, loves the show too and created a Glitch app that displays random quotes. Just click on Tahani to get started!

This Is What It Sounds Like When Machines Learn

A lot of machine learning is about curve-fitting, and tuning a guitar is a lot like curve-fitting too! That got Pablo Samuel Castro thinking. 🤔

The senior research software engineer at Google created "sound-of-learning", where you can literally hear a guitar being tuned as a machine learns how to create a satisfying E chord! 🎸

Ghana-based software developer Clinton Mbah put together a useful little utility app that grabs a list of articles for any Medium user. Just add a username to the end of the URL (like so!) and "mdm" will return the posts of any Medium user in JSON format. Handy!

Interaction designer Joel Gethin Lewis, created an augmented reality web app that puts a recreation of his head out into the world! 🤯

Created in WebXR, a proposed cross-platform Web API for creating AR and VR experiences, it needs Mozilla's experimental WebXR Viewer on iOS to run. But it's totally worth getting and playing around with to get a glimpse of the future (so long as you have the right kit!)

We're no strangers to an emoji or two here at Glitch, so it'll come as no surprise that we love "whac-emoji"! Created by Berlin-based Glitch user 1337core, it combines emojis with a 'whack-a-mole' type game. You'll be flattening 👻, and crushing 🦂 for hours. Just make sure that you don't bash a 👶 though!

This week's creators show that by sharing our creations with the world we can make people laugh, show folks new ways of doing things, and even give people the information they need to improve their lives. So Tharp might be right -- creativity can be tough, but it's definitely something worth fighting for!

Floating Heads and Musical Machines

We’ve seen all kinds of people use Glitch to build the apps of their dreams. One of the most popular reasons that folks use Glitch is for learning. As a matter of fact, harnessing that power is how we started 2018:

Teaching someone to code can be quite an endeavor, but with Glitch’s tools for collaboration, customization, and our take on version control, you’ve got everything you need to succeed. Let’s take a closer look at some more resources available for educators on Glitch as you get ready to go back to school.

The React Starter Kit is a free 5-part video course that includes interactive code examples to help you begin learning React. It includes interviews by our community engineering lead, Jenn Schiffer, with software engineers at some of the Web’s top companies talking about how they use React on a daily basis. Together, the components of the React Starter Kit are an excellent way to help bridge the gap between learning coding concepts and their real-world applications.

If diving straight into React is a little too much, try the Website Starter Kit. Like the React Starter Kit, this is a free video course with interactive code examples, but the focus here is on creating a website using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Node.js. Along with Jenn, you’ll see two members of our team, Jude Allred, and Niki Simonutti, as they help explain the languages that make up the Web that we know today.

When you visit the Glitch homepage, you’ll find several collections of apps based on specific themes. Let’s take a closer look at a few of them.

“Hello world” isn’t just a simple phrase — it’s also well known as a starter program that introduces you to a programming language. Our Hello Worlds collection aggregates dozens of Glitch projects that provide basic steps for getting started with a number of different languages and frameworks. Learn how to run console applications on Glitch, get started creating VR experiences on the web with A-Frame, or make your own website using the HTML5 boilerplate!

Our Learn to Code collection is perfect for hands-on teaching. This selection of Glitch projects takes learning to the next level with demos, courses, and other interactive examples. If you want to get an intro on machine learning, check out Hello Tensorflow and read up on Tensorflow.js. CSS Houdini is an interactive presentation about Houdini, a cutting-edge web tech! This collection also contains a few primers on Node.js, including Node School and Node Beginner. You can even learn how to write your own drum machine (complete with annotated source code!)

Building Blocks is a collection that focuses on databases, APIs, and some of the other basic parts of modern web development. Need to learn how to send an email using SendGrid? There’s a project for that. Stuck on authorization for your PWA? We’ve got a few example projects using Dropbox, Foursquare, or Slack that may help. We even have a nifty hackathon starter that you can use as a boilerplate for Node.js web applications!

We also publish You Got This! Zine in both print and digital formats. Our first issue was all about making web apps with Node.js, including tips for new coders, contributions from expert developers Cassidy Williams, Saron Yitbarek, and Steve Klabnik, and links to Glitch projects so you can extend what you’ve learned. In our second issue, we turned our focus to React.js, including more tips and contributions from developers, and we included profiles of some exciting creators on Glitch. We even launched a little mini-zine about Webpack on Instagram and Twitter!

Best of all, the Glitch community has helped create resources help others learn new technologies. Mozilla developer, Brian Peiris (@brianpeiris), constructed a remixable example project that illustrates machine learning concepts.

Programmer Emily Cain (@EMCain) created a fun Glitch app that lets you make your own doggie meme images. Remix the app for yourself and check out the extensively detailed README to help you and your students build their own!

Software developer and educator, Kelly Lougheed, has created a number of tutorials that guide you through learning and using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WebVR. Like ‘Dark & Stormy Night’, a beginner-friendly tutorial introducing HTML and CSS as you create a simple stormy night scene using CSS animations. As well as ‘JavaScript Magic 8 Ball’, a WebVR ball pit with physics and many more.

Meanwhile, the crew at Botwiki has created a bevy of bots for all sorts of purposes. Start with a simple Twitter or Tumblr bot and see where your imagination takes you!

Whether you’re teaching a class or just learning on your own, there’s a multitude of resources available on Glitch to help you reach your goals. Our starter kits, collections, and zines take coding concepts and make them approachable, interactive, and most of all…fun! Along with these tools, you also have a friendly community to back you up. Free and Open Learning Resources for All

First, the fundamentals: For current Manuscript customers, nothing is changing today — neither functionality nor licensing. And good things are changing in the future. We see lots of good progress coming, like long-overdue platform improvements, modernization of infrastructure behind Manuscript, and a re-engagement with the community to revitalize one of the most venerable and respected tools for creating great software.

Manuscript has been part of Fog Creek’s DNA for nearly two decades. First as FogBugz, which pioneered the market for bug tracking and project management, and then later with the addition of Kiln, which was groundbreaking in its innovations around version control. Then, with last year’s launch of Manuscript on top of that FogBugz engine, came the expansion of the ambitions of the platform to provide all the core tools needed to make great software.

But honestly, we’ve been resource-constrained as a small company to do justice to Manuscript, especially as Glitch has taken off and demanded our attention, and the market for software project management tools has gotten more competitive. So recently, we started looking at whether we could find a new home for Manuscript that would provide it with the investment and focus needed to not just support the current users and functionality of the platform, but to expand both.

Today, we’re letting the world know that we think we’ve found that path forward, with the team at DevFactory. The same team that’s been developing and supporting Manuscript at Fog Creek has overseen a transition to DevFactory’s processes and infrastructure for weeks, ensuring that this transition is seamless for users.

We’re proud of the nearly 20-year history that starts with FogBugz, leads to Manuscript, and has brought us to this new chapter. We’re thankful to all the people who’ve used these tools over the years. And I want to thank in particular the many team members, past and present, who’ve helped create a platform that’s enabled so many people to do their best work.

Moving Forward with Manuscript

Nowadays, we're flooded with prompts online that want your email address. All these subscription services can really add up, but if you can't beat 'em, then why not join 'em?

That's what Glitch user Kristen Cabrera (@kris10cabrera) had in mind when she created Subscribe! Use this nifty generator to get in on the mailbox mania and watch the results roll in! Each click brings you a randomly generated subscription prompt.

(Results and delivery are not guaranteed, of course 😜)

Most radio stations often cycle through a playlist of whatever songs are hot at the moment. Maybe you've got Nicki Minaj playing on one station, while another is playing a song from Death Cab for Cutie. But as the hours pass, have you ever thought about how many male artists are being played versus female artists?

That's where Glitch user Corey Dutson (@cdutson) and his app Radio Station Music Gender Analysis Tool comes in. According to Corey, the app is "a combination of techs one could use to scrape a website's playback data in order to assess gender disparity in song distribution." Clever!

Corey has made a remixable version of the app you can use to try out for your favorite radio station. The answers may surprise (and disappoint) you!

Some people possess a unique ability to assign sounds to colors called chromesthesia. Certain speech sounds or notes can have unique color pairings. Imagine if whenever you heard a car horn, you thought of the color red, or if the sound of water boiling was blue.

Software researcher, musician, and Glitch user Pablo Samuel Castro (@psc-g) created a fantastic app called jidiji which converts between music and colors, and it's a really cool experiment in musical representation.

Choose a preloaded song or image using the buttons in the app, or upload your own MIDI or image file, and let the magic begin! How does your favorite image sound? And what does your favorite song look like?

If you live in a major metropolitan area, it can be easy to forget how readily available high speed Internet access can be. Because of this, we might not notice just how technically heavy a lot of the Web can be. Visiting a website that takes a second to load on your desktop may load much slower depending on your data connection. Some websites have helped to make this process easier by introducing a low-bandwidth "reader view" version of their website, but it's not a global standard.

That's why this Glitch app from software engineer Ben Kuhn (@benkuhn) is so important. Just enter the URL of your choice, and the app will present a stripped down "reader view" version of the website. Very cool! Even better, he was able to create this app on Glitch in spite of the low-bandwidth he had while coding from a small city in Senegal.

Fortnite is one of the most popular video games out right now, and so is Splatoon! Both games involve teamwork and collaboration, so Glitch user Uve Avanto (@uveavanto) decided to combine the two into this delightful WebVR experience! Watch as Callie and Marie from Splatoon do one of the victory dances from Fortnite!

Like Becky Simpson says in the quote above, the key goal with Glitch is to just get started when it comes to creating. Maybe these apps will help inspire you to make something awesome today. If it does, then let us know what you create!

A Delight for the Senses

There’s no shortage of opinions these these days about Twitter. Whether it’s their design decisions, their response (or lack thereof) to harassment and abuse, their on-again-off-again relationship with developers or their handling of the Alex Jones situation that’s resulting in tomorrow’s “D-Day”. Twitter is its own trending topic.

But there’s one treatise about Twitter that caught my eye — “The Case Against Retweets: a modest proposal to improve Twitter”, or as the web-published version puts a little more pointedly, “Retweets are trash”. Alexis Madrigal, a reporter at The Atlantic, shares his experience of using Twitter with retweets disabled.

It’s not a new idea, but the impact from his perspective was a breakthrough.

It was in pursuit of this quieter, more serene Twitter experience that lead Stripe software engineer, Julia Evans, to create “turn-off-retweets” on Glitch. It’s an app that automates the process of turning off retweets for all your followers. Granted, you can individually disable retweets, but as Julia points out, “doing it manually was a pain — I had to do it one person at a time. So I wrote a tiny Glitch app to do it for me!”

“Twitter gets MUCH MORE QUIET”, comments Angela Ambroz, who used the app to turn off retweets for the folks she follows. And there are many others too:

As you can see, it’s not just Julia and Alexis who have taken active steps to refine their Twitter experience.

“I love feeds and the people I follow on Twitter,” Luca Hammer says. He made “opml”, a Glitch app that makes it easy to monitor your followers in your favorite RSS reader. It looks for feeds in the URLs of your followers and puts them in an OPML file for easy importing. So if you’re trying to spend less time on Twitter but don’t want to miss out on updates, you’re all set!

Luca also created “follow-management”, an app which adds everyone you follow to a list. That way you can read the list, as tweets in lists are still ordered chronologically.

If Twitter threads are hard to follow in your main timeline, check out “tweetstorms” by Reyner Crosby. This Glitch app allows you to browse through the threads — or tweetstorms — of any particular Twitter user. This can be extremely useful for prolific tweetstormers like Marc Andreessen and Andrew Chen, for example.

When someone targets and harasses you on Twitter, it can make you feel helpless. Reporting them is an option, but for a more immediate fix, try “poop-blocker”. This Glitch app from Argentina-based indie game developer, Rumpel, enables you to quickly block users that retweet a specific tweet and report them as spam.

While each of these apps is useful in their own right, together they highlight a powerful truth: the web doesn’t have to be a thing that’s done  It’s something we can make, not just consume.

With a little time and ingenuity, you can refine even the highly-controlled user experiences of major social networks and tailor them to your needs. You’re not at the mercy of some CEO’s latest idea; you can take things into your own hands.

Making Twitter Tolerable, One Glitch App At A Time

Angelina Bethoney created a bot that tweets legislation being worked on in Massachusetts. But she didn’t stop there. She made it a remixable template on Glitch, and the response she got when she shared the project was amazing!

As co-organizer of Botwiki, Bethoney helps lead a community of passionate makers who create all manner of weird and wonderful bots across platforms like Twitter, Messenger, Slack, Mastodon, and others.

But when she tweeted about her law bot template, which makes it easy for anyone to make a bot that tweets legislation in any state, it took off 🚀

Over the next few days, folks started remixing the bot, making tweaks, suggesting edits, and discussing the legislation being tweeted about. Even more exciting though is that these bot creators weren’t necessarily software developers. They were just folks with a passion for local government and a desire to better understand the changes being voted on and legislation being brought in around them.

For many it was their first time making a bot. For some it was their first time coding at all. But having a great template project to work from helped — and a few tweets quickly brought any additional help needed as the community rallied to support each other.

So far, bots have been created for 19 states right across the country from California to New York. Alex Martin even put together a master list to help people keep track of what bots have been created and for where.

Under-the-hood the bots are using the Open States API to get the list of legislation currently being worked on. But, “you can make a bot that tracks certain types of bills, or tracks particular sponsors — whatever you want,” says Bethoney.

“I’m really excited that people are not only making these bots but are taking a critical look at what these bills actually are”.

Indeed a number of people quickly noticed how much quicker bills about sick banks and commendations for government employees seemed to be passed through than other types. “For me, the point of this project was to not only bring awareness of the current [legislation] but to see patterns of the past as well,” adds Bethoney. And by following the law bots you do quickly get a sense of these patterns when you’re able to see what bills are being proposed and how they progress.

As Code for America says “Government works best when it’s government by the People.” And what these law bots show is not only how people can leverage technology to make Government more accessible, but how it really is something that anyone can help with— you don’t need to be an expert developer.

Code for America’s upcoming National Day of Civic Hacking is a great way to get involved with local government, regardless of your technical skill level. This weekend, August 11th 2018, you can join the Code for America Brigades for a nationwide day of action that brings together civic leaders, local governments, and community organizations to tackle some of our toughest challenges.

Events are being run across the country. There are Hackathons where people come in with ideas for an app and create prototypes at the event. There are City Camps, which are unconference events to discuss local problems and find connections to solve them. And there are Design Camps — user-centered events to reimagine government services.

Making Government Work with Bots & Hacking

Fancy packages with cut-out handles and unique closures are beautiful to look at, but designing and constructing them can be difficult. Tiffany Tseng (@scientiffic), has been learning about packaging design lately and discovered a way to convert beautiful packaging templates that she's discovered into SVG files!

SVG Tracer makes vector graphics from packaging template images, including creating solid and dashed lines for cutting and scoring. Tiffany detailed the whole project on Medium, which is definitely worth a read if you want to see her creative process behind the project.

Lots of print and web designers use placeholder text for typesetting purposes to get a sense of how text will look in their work. Often times, this placeholder text used is a series of Latin phrases which starts with the words "lorem ipsum", but Glitch user Kate Beard (@sbinlondon) has put a fun spin on this time-honored tradition.

Bee Ipsum replaces the standard lorem ipsum text with lines from  -- a really great way to inject some personality into your work. Just type in how many sentences you need, click the button, and you're in business! (Or is that buzzness?)

Artist, creative coder, and educator Sean Catangui (@seancaat) is one of the most prolific creators on Glitch, and his latest work is with high school students at Gakko, Lisha Zheng and Vithya Srikumar.

They recently built a drawing app where you can make all types of shapes and sketches directly in your browser! There are also undo, redo, and erase features, and when you're ready to share your masterpiece, just right-click on your creation and save it to your desktop.

Glitch user Ben Garvey (@bengarvey) builds projects on Glitch that really make you slow down and take a moment. His latest project is called take-a-walk, and the real beauty of the app unfolds the longer you leave it running. Colorful lines slowly fill the browser with squares and paths, and it's really quite mesmerizing.

Answering Questions on Stack Overflow with Glitch!

Over on Stack Overflow, Harish Karthick was having an issue with implementing an add to home screen (A2HS) shortcut for his PWA. After listing out the code for his JSON file, Mathias came to the rescue with a solution to the issue that he built using Glitch.

We've featured quite a variety of projects this week! Some are about making beautiful art, and others are about solving problems. The one thing they have in common though, is that their creators were willing to give things a go, even if they hadn't created something like it before. As Patrick McKenzie points out in the quote above, we're all learning all the time. And creating a project on Glitch is a great way to try things out and learn something new. What will you create today?

Busy Bees, Boxes, and Bots

I'm obsessed with this great VR game built on Glitch called Crystalis. Created by Alfredo Consebola as part of the 2018 Virtuleap WebXR Hackathon, the retro-inspired immersive action puzzle is versatile enough to be played on your desktop, mobile device, or using a VR headset like Oculus Go. Match trios of floating gems and watch as the spacescape comes alive with colorful constellations!

Remember the game show ? Contestants are presented with a prize behind one of three doors, and they have an opportunity to either keep the current prize or trade it for what lies behind the remaining doors. Which would you choose?

Glitch user Ido Green (@greenido) created an app which simulates this paradox up to 1,000,000 times to give you an idea of the outcome. Surprisingly, Ido says, the odds are not 50/50 -- you'll actually win 2/3 of the time if you switch!

Variable fonts are single files that behave like multiple fonts, allowing you to change a number of different display features without installing different variations of the typeface. Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Adobe are behind the new format, and nearly 70% of modern browsers support them.

Mustafa Kurtuldu, a design advocate at Google and a Glitch user (@mustafa-x), built an app which lets you experiment with variable fonts so you can see how they behave. Select any of the three typefaces, and use the sliders on the left to change the corresponding property. Advancements like this are the future of typography on the web!

Glitch users @jon and @snotskie created Sneaky Epic -- a game about software design that's being dubbed as "team deliberation training meets Jackbox meets Secret Hitler meets Werewolf meets Coup." (That does sound pretty epic!) You'll need at least five people to play, so gather some co-workers and give it a go!

There's a lot of fun environments that you can create on Glitch using AFrame and WebVR, and Giltch user Kelly Lougheed (@kellylougheed84055) built an app that mimics that old childhood favorite -- the ball pit. This ball pit has physics control, so try tilting from side to side to see the balls react.

The Virtual Reality Diversity Initiative (VRDI) began in 2017 as a way to provide events and skills to underrepresented groups in media and technology who are considering a career in VR. The initiative is back for its second year, and a recent VRDI event paired VR pros and newcomers in the United Kingdom.
