This Week on Function: Apple Notes Apologies

Why do so many celebrities use the Apple Notes app for social media apologies? On the latest episode of Function, we took a deep dive into this topic with insights from writer and culture expert Kara Brown and senior user experience designer Regine Gilbert.

One of my earliest gaming memories is playing  with my brother... and cheating by placing the Zapper right against the TV screen to shoot the ducks. Eventually I improved my aim and played the game regularly (I promise!)

Now you can relive the fun of  Zapper-free with this really fun app by developer and Glitch user Oz Ramos (@labofoz). It uses your computer's webcam to trace your facial movements; just look at the ducks to aim, and smile to shoot. Check out the video below for an example of how it works!

Chess is one of the oldest games in the world, but that hasn't stopped developer and Glitch user Byron Hulcher (@byronhulcher) from finding a new, unique way to make the game even more challenging.

Chess but harder is like the classic game you already know, but there's a '' twist with some of the board being hidden by a mysterious darkness. Can you capture the king when you can't even see where it is?

Have you heard of fractals? Wikipedia defines them as a "detailed, recursive, and infinitely self-similar mathematical set", and if you've seen lightning bolts or even frost crystals on glass, then you know that fractals are all around us.

The Sierpinski triangle is a special fractal, and perhaps one of the most recognizable and easily created ones as well. K-12 computer science teacher and Glitch user Erik Nauman (@enauman) built an app that lets you adjust the "nuttiness" on a Sierpinski triangle and explode the fractal into its seperate components, with artistic results. Click the "redraw" button for a new triangle.

Algorithmic artist and Glitch user n-schedé (@n-schede) builds beautiful browser-based creations, and their latest work of art is another masterpiece.

N-finity is an ever-changing geometric wonder, and it's quite hypnotizing to watch. Click the "Randomise" button for new colors, and then sit back and watch the pattern slowly morph over time. Isn't math beautiful?

Last month, we showed you a really fun Spider-Man themed tower defense style game from high school student and Glitch user Christian Cromer (@ChristianCromer). Christian is back at it with his latest app, a side-scroller adventure game with a new foe -- the infamous Green Goblin!

Jump between the platforms and shoot webs at the Green Goblin to win the game. Don't fall -- one slip-up and it's game over.

Throughout last month, many of you participated in Codetober - a variation on the popular Inktober challenge. Engineer and Glitch user Monica Dinculescu (@notwaldorf) put her own spin on the challenge by making variations on the same app every day in October.

The tech industry moves pretty fast, and recruiters know this well. There always seems to be a new language or framework to learn, but it can be frustrating when you encounter a job listing that wants you to have 5+ years of experience in a half-dozen skills for an entry-level junior developer position. Worse still is if the language or framework hasn't even existed for that long!

Luckily, Glitch user James (@jsrn) built an app for tech recruiters that should prevent this from happening in the future. This list lets you know just how long certain technologies have existed, and you can filter the list by typing in the language or framework of your choice. Send this off to the next recruiter who requires you to have a decade of Tensorflow experience!

Okay, my poetry skills could use some work, but luckily writer, coder and Glitch user Rory Green (@rorycodinstuff) has just the app to help. This generative poem template continually creates random stanzas the longer it runs. Try remixing it and changing up the code and language and become your own poet laureate!

Earlier this year, we spoke with Jer Thorp, innovator-in-residence at the Library of Congress. We spoke about Jer creating apps using Glitch, and one of his experiments, A Library of Color, is both informative and colorful.

As developer advocate and principal engineer at Samsung, Ada Rose Cannon works on the cutting-edge of Web technologies. From helping promote advanced web features like progressive web apps, web virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), to contributing to open source projects that help developers build great web applications.

As co-chair of the W3C Immersive Web Working Group, Ada is helping to bring high-performance VR and AR to the open Web, with APIs to build fully immersive experiences that work with almost any browser-connected VR headset.
Her projects on Glitch range from fun games to useful utilities, including the following:

Ada-Game-Engine
A WebVR game, built in a week. It's a 3rd-person RPG that enables you to explore the world around you by interacting with text or by moving around the 3D environment.

Adalytics-Live
An auto-updating page hit counter that doesn't use cookies or tracking to provide web stats for a project.

Earthy-Course
The Japanese animated fantasy film character Totoro in a rainy, evening-time WebVR scene.

Ada has always been exploring what's possible on the Web, whether researching and discovering new web tech and trends at FTLabs or working with coveted creators while at PlayStation. A core part of this work has involved building short-life prototypes, leading to an appreciation of the value of shipping - getting stuff out into the world for people to use and provide feedback on, rather than endless optimization behind closed doors.

"Stuff doesn't have to be perfect," says Ada, "it just needs to work for people." And you can see this approach in action in her write-up "How I built a game in a week". It walks you through the resources, tools, and compromises needed to rapidly create a WebVR game in such a short time-frame.

It's courageous developers like Ada, who not only try things out but who share their code and document their process that helps us all appreciate, that everyone, no matter their skill level or experience, have to make pragmatic choices when coding. By enabling us all to understand how impressive projects really get made, this helps alleviate feelings of impostor syndrome and frustration in others just starting out. Ada's work inspires by making it feel like we can all learn something new and experience the cutting-edge of the Web.

The Cutting-Edge of the Web with Ada Rose Cannon

Build Firebase Apps Instantly, on Glitch

There are several hilarious characters on the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek, especially the dramatic and verbose Moira Rose. If you love fruit wine as much as she does, then you'll find this app from Glitch user Emily C. (@emilyca11) positively delightful.

What Would Moira Rose Say? cycles through quotes from Moira along with definitions from Dictionary.com. Try remixing the app and making your own vocabulary builder!

One of the latest projects from creative coder and Glitch user Sean Catangui (@seancaat) takes us back to the days of Winamp and audio visualization plugins.

VJ is a work in progress (you could say it's  complete), and uses SVG animations to create a trippy and colorful scene. Press the F key for a waveform to appear, and press the spacebar to change the color and size of the circles. The artist's name is fixed, but you can remix the app and change it to whatever you'd like. Show us how else you would improve upon this app!

Developer and Glitch user Johan Karlsson (@DonkarlssonSan) calls himself a "creative coder by night," and Text by Lines is the latest in a series of projects exploring motion and geometry.

Type the text of your choice in the text field at the top left of the page to change what's displayed. Try using some fancy Unicode text, and then right-click anywhere in the app to save your creation as an image.

Generative artist and Glitch user Kate Compton (@galaxykate) is well known for the beautiful visual works she creates using code.

Her latest project is Slidertoy, a platform for creating procedurally-generated terrains and other art. According to Kate, this platform is best for those with at least some knowledge of JavaScript, and so far has only been tested for Chrome.

Fall is here, and that means cooler temperatures, warmer beverages, and cozy interiors — especially if you've got a nice quilt to snuggle under to keep warm. But if you don't, maybe you can get some quilting inspiration from web developer and Glitch user Clara Beyer (@csb324).

QuiltBot is a generative art project that not only creates new colorful quilts, but also tweets out the designs with some helpful quilting tips and other koans. Now all I need is a cozy fireplace app and I'm good for the season.

Music To Your Ears

A completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart -- or CAPTCHA, for short -- is often used on web forms to ensure that data that's been entered and submitted has been done by a human. It's a useful way to cut down on spam. The first CAPTCHA is over 30 years old, making it a fundamental part of the World Wide Web.

Web developer and glitch user Patrick Weaver (@PatrickWeaver) has a little fun with CAPTCHAs in his Glitch app Please Confirm You Are A Robot. Enter your name, tick the checkbox, and see if you can gain access!

Brackets aren't just for college basketball anymore! Talk to five fans of any music artist, and chances are you'll get five different answers as to which tune is their best.

Glitch user Renato (@Renato) created a bracket ranking app based on the repetoire of popular rapper Lil Peep; just click each song to advance them throughout the bracket. Try remixing it and customizing it for your favorite music artist!

Math is fantastic for solving problems and figuring out patterns -- that's where the famous Venn diagram comes from. But what happens if you try to merge a bunch of circles at once?

Mathematician and Glitch User Christian Lawson-Perfect (@christianp) answers that question with an app called Spontaneous Venning. As the simulation runs, people either wander about, walk in a circle, gravitate towards the center, or go towards (or away from) others like them. Refresh the app to run a new trial!

Programmers are creating really stunning artwork on Glitch using P5.js. Generative artist Anders Hoff (@inconvergent) is even trying out art on Glitch and created a small sandbox with examples that you can view, remix, and make your own. Which one is your favorite?

Here at Glitch, our new design engineer Tiffany Tseng (@scientiffic) has been experimenting with micro:bit devices. These tiny tools contain sensors, LEDs and other apparatuses, and are often used to teach basic programming concepts in a tangible way.

Through her work, Tiff has built several nifty starter apps that let you control and read sensor values from a micro:bit! You'll need a micro:bit to put these apps to use, of course, but check out the videos below to get an idea of how they work!

Can You Believe These Food Trends? 🍲📈

I consider myself a pretty adventurous eater, but some of the latest culinary crazes are a bit hard to swallow. Forget cronuts and ramen burgers -- gastronomical creations like seven pound pizza burritos and soft shell crabs fried in hot Cheetos can quickly go from interesting to Instagrammable.

UX engineer and Glitch user Aaron Z. Best (@AaronZBest) created an app called FoodHype that cashes in on these fads with "auto-generated food trend journalism at your fingertips!" While all of these headlines are fake, they're  not that far from the truth. Sprout ice cream, anyone?

The latest Spider-Man game on PlayStation 4 takes the wall-crawling web slinger's adventures to a whole new level. But guess what -- you can play a Spider-Man game right here on Glitch too!

High school student and Glitch user Christian Cromer (@ChristianCromer) created a full-featured tower defense style game using p5js! Protect the citizens from hordes of black widow spiders and save the day! Face front, true believers!

Speaking of p5js, educational technologist and Glitch user Erik Nauman (@enauman) uses it to teach the concept of recursion. His app Recursion Boxes gives a visual display of how recursion works with a transparent, rotating set of cubes. It's mesmerizing! 🤩

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter most well-known for his grid-based paintings. Bogotá-based educator and Glitch user Fabio Cortés (@fcor) created an app that replicates Mondrian's famous paintings with fantastic accuracy. The app is based on a generative artistry tutorial from generativeartistry.com, and every time you refresh the page, you'll get a new "painting". Who knew art and code could work so well together?

Last week, we talked about Inktober, and shared some examples of Glitch users who created their own spin on this by creating a new app each day. Glitch user Monica Dinculescu (@notwaldorf) has kept the momentum going on her Codetober apps, creating whimsical and topical variations on a theme each day. Game and Watch

I’ve played Pokémon since 1998, but there are still some types of Pokémon I’m never quite sure how to battle. If I’m battling a fire 🔥 Pokémon it’s pretty obvious– use water 💧! But what about a dark type?

I wish I could ask Siri for all my Pokémon battle on-the-go type matchup needs. Sadly, if you ask her, she directs you to a web search. And who has time for that?

But now I can create my own Siri commands with Glitch and the new iOS Shortcuts app. Well, new-ish; the Shortcuts app is really just a new version of Workflow, an automation app created in 2014. Apple bought it in 2017. With the rename, it also gets something Workflow didn’t have: Siri integration.

Each Shortcut is almost like a little spell 🧙🏼‍♀️ you can cast to do a task. You build Shortcuts from “Actions” such as:

And recording video (which can come in handy for serious stuff, like getting pulled over by the police!)

It’s a little like programming because you can use stuff from one Action and pass it to another. For example, taking the title of a calendar event and tweeting it. Or taking two images and making one image out of them.

Where Glitch comes in is as a handy tool for:

Advanced processing of data grabbed by a Shortcut Action.

Capturing data from somewhere else to use in your shortcut.

Together, iOS Shortcuts and Glitch are a powerful duo. We’ll show you some examples of what people have already created using Shortcuts and Glitch. Then I’ll walk you through, step-by-step, an example Glitch-powered Shortcut that you can remix to create your own.

We got inspired by these two nifty Glitch projects:

If you uninstall the News App on your iOS device, every time you visit an apple.news link it will be broken 😭

Luckily you can open it with the Chapel Pews shortcut by Ashur. It passes the URL to Glitch, then Glitch tries to find the link to the HTML article. If it finds it, it will redirect you to the article. If it doesn’t, it will show a nifty error page that will tell you how to reinstall news.

When is “Game of Thrones” on next? This Shortcut by WilsonSmith asks you what show you want to know about, then passes it Glitch. Then the Glitch application grabs some data from Nextair.tv to tell you when it’s on next! Nice!

But how does it all work? Well, the secret is that you can pass text from Shortcuts to Glitch by adding it to the end of the Glitch app URL.

For my shortcut, I want it to take a Pokémon type and pass it to the Glitch app, so it would be

super-effective.glitch.me/TYPE-OF-POKEMON

I get the Pokémon type by adding the Action “dictate text.” This means Siri asks me what type I want to know about, then Shortcuts can use whatever I say in Shortcuts Actions.

Now let’s tell it to use the results and put them at the end of the URL of my Glitch app. To do that let’s use the “URL” Action.

And guess what’s an option to put at the end of the URL? The text we just collected from our “dictate text” Action.

And finally, grab the contents of our fancy ✨ new URL with the “Get Contents of URL” Action.

This is how we pass it to Glitch. How? Well, my app was created from “New Project” → Node Express. So it’s built off of Express.

Express is a “web framework.” What’s important to us is it can serve our website and do our things based on the “route” at the end of the URL.

Passes “dark” to our Glitch application. ” What is it going to do with it? It’s going to query the PokéAPI. Yes, there’s an API for Pokémon! It started as a simple weekend project, but now it has almost everything you could ever want to know about Pokémon. Not just Pokémon, but berries, items, and of course what we need: type matchup info. Check out the results for “dark” to see the type of data we’ll be working with.

I called the API using “pokedex-promise-v2”, a nice little tool that allows me to query the PokéAPI with just a few lines of code.

Once it gets back the data, I use plain Javascript to take the data and turn it into a sentence that Siri can say.

Now, back to our Shortcut. Let’s add the “Speak Text” Action and “add to Siri” which means when we say “Super Effective” to Siri, it will trigger our new shortcut.

It will then ask me what ‘type’ I need to know about. Once I tell it, the Glitch app does its thing. Finally, Siri tells me what types of Pokémon are super effective against Dark!

Of course you can use the PokéAPI in Shortcuts without Glitch if you want, but that requires building a much more complicated Shortcut. I also like that I can use my Glitch app as a plain old-fashioned website or tool for other devices like Alexa.

Want to create your own Glitch-powered iOS Shortcuts? Well, our Super Effective app is remixable 🎤🎶! Just click “remix” and start coding. Here are some ideas:

Want to know what types of Pokémon are effective against a specific Pokémon like Snorlax? Use Shortcuts to get a Pokémon name and then use the PokéAPI in Glitch to find out what type are effective against it.

Use Shortcuts to pass a food name to Glitch. Then Query an API like Nutritionix or the USDA to get information about it on the go.

Want to go super fancy? Create your own API in Glitch to use with Shortcuts!

Creating Super Effective iOS Shortcuts with Glitch

The brisk air, the bright foliage...nothing quite says fall like a weekend getaway to the mountains. But if you're in a part of the world where that's not possible, then full-stack developer and Glitch user Daniel Schep (@dschep) has something for you.

This gorgeous app displays the Blue Ridge Mountains, including a sun that displays based on the time of the year! Use the slider at the top left to change the hue of the mountains, or click the fullscreen button at the bottom right for the full-range experience. Remix the app and change the coordinates to see the mountains from your city!

There's something magical and whimsical about the Orbit app from artist and Glitch user n-schedé (@n-schede). They call Orbit a "lil spacey flower thing", and you can randomize the creation of the flower to make images with different background colors, locus point size, and speed of growth. Once you're happy with your creation, click the "Save" button and download the finished product!

It's October, and illustrators and artists worldwide are participating in Inktober, a challenge to do one ink drawing a day for the entire month. You can follow the official prompts, but if you want to kick the difficulty up a notch, try the Randomtober app from Glitch users Brie Alsbury (@BrieAlsbury) and Jessica Johnston (@JJLoa). Just click the "Prompt Me" button to generate new prompts like an angry General Leia or a steampunk clown!

And in true Glitchy fashion, Glitch users Monica Dinculescu (@notwaldorf) and Chris Joel (@cdata) are doing their own takes on Inktober by building and adding onto a Glitch app each day. Take a look at what they've created so far!

If you're looking to build Actions for Google Assistant, Dialogflow is the way to go. The technology behind it is based on natural language conversations, and it supports English, French, and over a dozen other languages.

Developer and Glitch user Bernard Chhun (@bchhun) created an example app on Glitch that illustrates how you can link Dialogflow with a Google spreadsheet. Remix the app and you can change what information is returned from the spreadsheet!

Interactive apps on Glitch really push the boundaries of what's possible using technology. This is especially the case with educators that are utilizing Glitch as a way to teach the next generation of creators.

Student and Glitch user Char Stiles (@CharStiles), for example, created an app from a homework assignment that uses a mix of machine learning (via ml5.js), PoseNet, and your webcam, to accurately map a motion capture skeleton! Give it a try for yourself!

The modern job search is tough, and skilled candidates have to try new methods to stand out from the crowd. I've seen people make viral videos, start social media campaigns, and even bake cookies to get closer to their dream job.

Technical product manager, software producer, and Glitch user Nathan Backous (@nbackous) takes things one step further by creating his resume in virtual reality. (A , if you will.) Glance around the pink and blue VR landscape and interact with the elements there to view Nathan's work history, his LinkedIn profile, and to contact him. Good luck Nathan!
