Adam Savage is back satisfying some of your most burning science- and pop-culture-related questions (Can anyone hear you scream in space? Does an arrow really fly straight?), and helping him are six of the brightest young minds in America.

This 15-year-old from Lancaster, CA, is a skilled builder and robotics wiz, who is also experienced in CAD drawing and 3D printing. In 2017 Valerie was the team leader of her school’s robotics team that won the state championship, qualifying them to go to the World’s VEX Robotics competition. Valerie and her partner recently won 1st place in their school’s science fair, which later won 2nd place district wide.

The 12-year-old from Brooklyn is a self-taught maker, programmer & circuit wiz. At 9 years-old, he started building PCs and “Franken-Mac”  computers; at 10 years old, he took his first microcontroller and was blinking LEDs in one night, soldering his first circuit boards by the end of the same week. By 11 he was featured in “Make” for his early-model “min-tin” sized video game system, now a staple of maker culture.

A 12-year-old with a background in coding, robotics and motion physics, Cannan will be entering his second year of college in the fall at Texas Christian University where he’s a double major in Physics & Astronomy and Engineering. His dream is to be an astronaut and perhaps be one of the first humans to walk on Mars.

This Slidell, Louisiana 15-year-old has been around cars in his dad’s custom hot rod shop since he was a baby. After building a mini chopper by himself at the age of 12, he entered a car show and won 1st place. From fixing up jacked up 4x4s to building scooters, to modifying radio controlled cars, Jesse knows his way around a vehicle. He is also skilled at drawing, crafting and building models.

The 14-year-old from Metairie, Louisiana is a builder who has been involved with remodeling houses with her father since a young age. Rachel was a 2016 and 2017 Broadcom MASTERS Top 30 Finalist. In 2017 she was awarded the Duke TIP challenge certificate and presented her current project to the 2017 American Geophysical Union at Bright Stars, a forum that hosted over 20,000 earth and space scientists from around the world.

The South Dakota 13-year-old is a multiple award-winning, patent pending inventor, builder, and maker. An advocate for STEAM, in 2017 Allie was recognized as one of the 21 under 21 girls who are changing the world by Teen Vogue magazine and was also recognized by 3M as one of the top 10 young scientists in the country. In 2016 Allie won the Global Spark Lab Invent-It-Challenge with a frostbite warning system.

Also featured in MythBusters Jr. are builders Tamara Robertson, whose talents have been seen in MythBusters: The Search and SciJinks, and Jon Marcu, who has worked on a number of television and film productions.

This Week on Function: Why Are Outdated Voting Machines Still Running U.S. Elections?

The 2018 midterm elections have wrapped up here in the U.S., and issues with voting machines are back in the news cycle. It's not a hanging chad situation like the 2000 presidential election recount in Florida, but malfunctions, outdated tech, and talk of interference from foreign powers has tanked voter confidence. With the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign season about to kickoff, how do you rock the vote when you're not even sure it's being properly counted? And how do you put trust in a voting system that's full of weak links?

On Function this week, we're looking at voting machines and election security. Anil talks with Verified Voting data consultant Matt Bernhard about the history of voting machines and the broad social implications of technology and privacy. We also talk to Maurice Turner, a former poll worker and senior technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, who gives practical advice for individual voters who are worried about the trustworthiness of their local precincts.

Earlier this week, Mozilla announced that they are sunsetting Thimble, their browser-based educational code editor. Fret not, because we've partnered with Thimble to bring the great community projects built there over to Glitch.

Twitter has made a tremendous impact on the Web, but if you've been on there for any recent amount of time, you know that it can become way too easy to tweet any and every thought that comes into your head. Not only that, your archive of tweets is ripe for the picking for any other Twitter user to amplify and completely blow out of context.

Start the year on a fresh slate with this app from Glitch user Ryan Giglio (@ryangiglio) and delete your entire Twitter archive. To get started, just remix the app and follow the directions in the README. Don't forget to download your tweet archive first (that is, if you'd like to hold on to it for nostalgia's sake).

Speaking of going out with a bang, London-based engineer and Glitch user Rowan Manning (@rowanmanning) created an app that turns regular boring emoji into exploding emoji --  Spice up those conversations in your Slack team and add a little  to your chat room. (And unlike most exploding things, you can try this at home.)

Unlock your inner Picasso this holiday season with this really fun drawing app from Google engineer and Glitch user Monica Dinculescu (@notwaldorf). Magic Sketchpad uses machine learning to complete a doodle you create based on a specific category you select, such as dolphin or cat. Try drawing multiple categories on the same page and let the app do the rest.

Python contributor, educator, and Glitch user Carl Friedrich Bolz-Tereick (@cfbolz) highlights a great educational use for Glitch. In Porting Jürgen LIT Fischer's "sinus" from Fortran, Carl talks about Fischer's computer artwork, walks through the process of converting it to JavaScript, and then concludes with an interactive version of one of Fischer's pieces. If learning to code is on your list of new year's resolutions, then Carl's app is a great template to follow as you begin your coding journey.

Going Out With A Bang!

TL;DR: Mozilla is beginning the process of shutting down Thimble. While Thimble won’t be closed until December 2019, we’re working with the Thimble team at Mozilla to make it as easy as possible to migrate your Thimble projects to Glitch now, so you can continue to build and publish apps, web pages, and more for free.

Thimble is Mozilla’s browser-based, educational code editor. As Mozilla has refocused its resources on other projects, the Thimble project has been in maintenance mode for some time, and recently the team made a plan to sunset the Thimble project in December 2019.

At Glitch, we’re committed to the Thimble community, which means keeping the more than 1.4 million Thimble projects online, and providing Thimble users with a new home for your projects and users so that you can continue to edit and build new projects on Glitch for free.

We’re working to make the migration process as simple as possible — it’ll be just a few clicks. What’s more, Thimble’s incremental shut-down is being deliberately timed around semesters to minimize disruption to course schedules.

The connection between the Thimble and Glitch communities goes much deeper than just being able to import projects. This Week on Function: Behind the Rising Labor Movement in Tech

On November 1, 2018, thousands of Google employees around the world staged a mass walkout in protest of how the company handled claims of sexual misconduct. While this is not the first time we have seen protests at this scale, it does signal to the larger community that workers at huge tech companies like these are at an inflection point. When is enough, enough?

This week on Function, host and Glitch CEO Anil Dash sits down with Leigh Honeywell, Mark S. Luckie, and Matt Rivitz to take a look at the rising labor movement in tech from those whose advocacy helped set the foundation for what we see today around the dissent from tech workers.

'Tis the season for holiday cheer, and for a lot of people, that means making and jamming out to playlists on Spotify. Sharing playlists is always great, but since they're public by default, anyone following you can see every playlist you have, including that one for Swedish pop from the 90s called . (Okay, that may just be me.)

But thanks to engineer and Glitch user Eric Lewis (@EricLewis), you can now make all your Spotify playlists private with a single click. Just click the green button to give the app permisions to your Spotify account, and voila -- your playlists are now for your eyes (and ears) only.

Today's games are a feast for the senses with 4K graphics and killer surround sound. But back when I first started gaming, text-based RPGs were king. All the graphics and sound were in your mind. It sort of gives a new meaning to virtual reality, if you think about it.

Dive: The Game is a callback to those early days of video games. You start off as an intrepid adventure with a calling to the sea. Each choice leads you deeper into the story as you discover the mysteries of the briny deep. Thank you for the trip down memory lane, Eve (@eveahe)!

An app that can "ingest music and generate a field of visualization flowers" sounds pretty trippy, but the effect it creates is stunning. WaveWall is the latest app from technologist and Glitch user Andrew Rodgers (@acedrew), and it turns music into an animated visualization of revolved waveforms. You can upload a song or talk into your microphone, and then download the resulting design as an SVG or PNG file.

As the saying goes, invention is the mother of necessity. What started out as a simple request between two Twitter users ended up becoming a handy way for small farmers to figure out dosage amounts for their livestock. Enter in the weight of your animal along with recommended dosage and preparation strength numbers, and let the calculator do the rest. Thank you Glitch user Adrienne L. The best technology doesn't need to smack you over the head to let you know that it's doing its job. Sometimes, a gentle reminder is enough. This is especially the case when it comes to inclusive language, and this app from Glitch user Knut Melvær (@kmelve) is a handy little Slack bot that pops in to suggest alernate terms to use instead of the word "guys". It's quick, non-shaming, and best of all, easy to install. Just click the "Add to Slack" button and start improving your Slack team today.

This Week on Function: Podcast Advertising

Squarespace. Mailchimp. Casper. Blue Apron. If you’re a regular podcast listener, then there’s no doubt you’ve heard ads from these companies, among many others.

This week on Function, we examine the world of podcast advertising. Host and Glitch CEO Anil Dash sits down with Francesco Baschieri, president of Voxnest, and talks about some of the trends and technology behind podcast ads. We also hear from New York City podcasting duo Jade + XD and pull back the curtain on advertising and monetization from an independent media perspective.

Speaking of podcasts, you may have seen some of your favorite shows share small clips from recent episodes in the form of a video. (We even do it for our podcast.)

There's several ways to make these shareable videos -- also called audiograms -- and Glitch user Tennyson (@tennyson) created an app that lets you build your own custom audiograms. Upload your audio of choice, edit the waveform, and use your own image to make the audiogram come alive.

When I was a kid, there was someone in my class who was a whiz on the piano. He could hear a song on the radio, sit down at the keys, and play it and riff on it like he wrote it himself. Except for a jazzy version of , the piano was never my forte. But thanks to engineer and Glitch user Monica Dinculescu (@notwaldorf), I can finally tickle the ivories like a true professional. And so can you!

Monica's app Piano Genie mimics an entire piano in just eight keys, and it uses magenta.js to automatically improvise new notes. Check out the explanation behind how the app works, then give it a try and compose the next smash hit!

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) takes place every November, and hundreds of thousands of people participate in the marathon journey of writing a 50,000 word novel in just 30 days. National Novel Generation Month (NaNoGenMo) is...a bit different. Instead of stressing over characters and plot lines, you can let your computer write your novel for you. There is one rule: you must share at least one novel along with your source code at the end.

Artist, musician and Glitch user Emma Winston (@emmawinston) published her NaNoGenMo novel "Boring Tales From Tiny Places", and it was generated using JavaScript, RiTa and Tracery. Read the novel below, and remix it to make your own tech-generated magnum opus.

Humans have created machines to emulate human speech for over a hundred years. Bell Labs created the vocoder in the 1930s, and as computing has grown over the years, now we have apps like web-speech from Glitch user @yung_kropotkin. Type in the text of your choice, and select from over twenty different speech types, and change up the rate and pitch to find the voice that you like best.

If 2018 has taught us anything, it's that tech innovation and modern government aren't exactly the best of friends. Regardless of that, we still use technology to rally behind candidates, champion important causes and spread the word about the laws that effect us all.

Canadian high schooler and Glitch user Maggie Lee (@Margaretl33) wanted to clear up the confusion about the upcoming referendum in British Columbia around electoral reform. She built a website on Glitch that explains the three proposed systems, and it's been so popular that her local newspaper even helped amplify it to their readers.

According to Maggie, this is an important issue that "could really change who we see in our legislature and what happens in our province."

This Week on Function: Copyrights on YouTube

On this week's episode of Function, we look into YouTube and copyright infringement with entertainment lawyer Gordon Firemark and YouTuber and musician Paul Davids. Gordon specializes in theatre, film, television, and new media law, and he breaks down how works become copyright, talks about the concept of fair use, and discusses with Anil why a copyright disclaimer could do more harm than good.

Later, Anil speaks with Paul about how YouTube's Content ID system resulted in getting a copyright strike on his own original song. As someone who has been on the other side of this issue, Paul offers a thoughtful and nuanced explanation on his situation that will influence how you think about your work and copyrights.

Kids all over the world -- including those who are kids at heart -- are busy writing letters to Santa Claus so he knows exactly what gifts to bring when he slides down the chimney on Christmas Eve. Riley Walz created a project called Santa, Mail Me! which lets parents order handwritten, personalized letters from Santa to their children, and a Glitch app is part of the engine behind it!

Riley detailed the entire process on Twitter, which includes connecting to Airtable's API using a Glitch app to manage the orders. It's a really fantastic example of how Glitch can be used to help connect services (and even spread a little holiday cheer).

One of my favorite ways to pass the time when I'm waiting in the airport is by researching random topics online. If you have a curious mind and want to dive into some new information, check out randomobsession, an app from Glitch user @elankiderman.

The app pulls from Quartz's daily newsletter called , and every time you click or tap the big red button in the app, you'll be served a new subject to learn about to stimulate your mind. What did you learn about today?

Santa's not the only one making a list and checking it twice! A lot of people are making their year-end lists right now, including our own Tiffany Tseng (@scientiffic). Her app includes her favorite books of 2018, but feel free to remix the app for yourself and customize it with your own books (or movies or albums or whatever you'd like).

When I was a kid, the holidays meant seeing relatives visit from out of town and having them furiously pinch my chubby cheeks. "Oh, you are just so cute that I could eat you up!" It's endearing, sure, but also...pinched cheeks hurt, man. Not cool.

Luckily, Glitch user qwer (@Gumball12) has created an app so you can pinch and stretch the cheeks of the characters from  Choose from Gumball, Darwin, or Anaïs and start pinching and stretching. No pain necessary!

The holidays are also the perfect time for parties and get-togethers. If you need some quick festive cheer for your winter shindig, Glitch user Jonathan Daggerhart (@daggerhart) has you covered.

Abstract Disco! is a disco. And it's abstract. But more than that, it's a grid of randomly flashing colors that you can customize using different emoji and icons. Add a little pop art flair to your next holiday hangout.

I jot down ideas and other things in a notes app on my phone all the time. Sometimes, it's easy to find what I'm looking for when I need it, but other times, notes will easily get lost in the shuffle.

If you use Evernote and find yourself in this same situation, Glitch user and IBM engineer Christopher Galtenberg (@galtenberg) created an app which randomly presents new notes from your archive. You will need to remix the app and add your Evernote credentials to get started, but once you've done that, it will help you remember and discover insights you completely forgot about.

Home for the Holidays

This week on Function, we answer one of the most requested questions in tech: should Twitter have an edit button? We talk with Leslie Miley, former engineering manager at Twitter, about the behind-the-scenes technical and ethical considerations that need to take place to carry out this feature from a product level.

We also talk to Andy Carvin, author, professor, and former social media editor at NPR. Andy knows firsthand how one misinformed tweet can have a dangerous ripple effect, and talks about how the possibility of editing that tweet may have caused even more damage.

Pioneering computer artist Vera Molnár's work is characterized by bold, geometric themes and shapes. Molnár used Fortran and BASIC in her work, which seems like a lifetime ago when you think about the speed at which technology and computer graphics have changed.

Software Engineer and Glitch user Monica Dinculsescu (@notwaldorf) builds on Molnár's creations by transforming one of her earliest works, "Un Deux Trois," into a mysterious 8-bit song. As the music goes on, the painting comes to life. Keep refreshing the app to hear different instruments and melodies.

Bringing Hands-Free Web Functionality to Everyone

Portland-based digital creator Oz Ramos (@LabOfOz) is doing some really awesome work using Handsfree.js, a library he created that adds hands-free functionality to any website or web service. As a School of AI Fellow, Oz has a goal to connect one million people to the web using Handsfree.js.

Oz has made his work available on Glitch as a helpful starter kit, so anyone can begin using Handsfree.js in their own projects. Remix the app and show us what you create!

At this year's Chrome Dev Summit, Google talked about the next great platform for the immersive web: your web browser. A lot of this is made possible by the Polymer project, a set of libraries, tools, and standards to help build a better web.

Sounds pretty cool, right? If this piques your interest, then take a look at model-viewer. This app by Glitch user Christopher Joel (@cdata) uses LitElement, a simple base class for creating fast, lightweight web components. Remix the app and give it a try!

The Material Design framework gives you an expansive set of guidelines and tools to create user interfaces, apps, and websites. But it can be difficult to figure out where or how to start using it.

Design advocate Yasmine Evjen (@yasmineevjen) and software engineers Matt Goo (@moog16), Bonnie Zhou (@bonniezhou), and Lynn Jepsen (@lynnmercier) — have created a useful app that serves as a primer to Material Components and Theming. Even better, it features a bunch of great photos of dogs to help you learn. Remix the app and follow the well-documented README for more information.

To the average person, math may just seem like a bunch of numbers and equations, but there's a lot of elegance and beauty if you peek just under the surface. Fractals, tesselations, the golden ratio...math is all around us in many ways.

This chord machine app from technologist and Glitch user Andrew Rodgers (@acedrew) is a great example of this kind of mathematical beauty. As chords are drawn around a circle, a cardioid pattern is revealed; adjust the line color, multiplicand, and scale to generate different drawings. You can also record the animation and save it as a video. Experiment with the settings and see what you can create.

Look, Listen and Learn

One of our most requested features is the ability to use your own domains with Glitch, and now you can! We've teamed up with Fly.io to enable custom domains on Glitch in just a couple of clicks.

Ah, the humble animated GIF. We use them on social media or in text messages as a way to signify a reaction, tell a story, or just to have a laugh. It's not all fun and games though — organizations and media companies are cracking down on animated GIF usage, with some going as far as issuing copyright notices against animated GIF creators. On the latest episode of Function, we take a closer look at this and other GIF-related issues with our guests Kenyatta Cheese and T. Kyle MacMahon.

Chrome Summit

This week was Google's Chrome Dev Summit. Among their many exciting announcements was web.dev, their fab new learning platform which helps you learn and apply the web's modern capabilities to your own sites and apps. They've integrated Glitch into the platform to power their hands-on code labs. Check it out!

Last month we highlighted some of the amazing apps folks were creating on Glitch for Codetober. Now Codevember is in full swing and it's got many people creating too. Codevember is a challenge for developers to sharpen their creativity and improve their skills. The goal is to build a creative piece of code every day of November.

Algorithmic art creator n–schedé has been busy, creating spindles, cat-eyes, bomp and more.

Of course, this one is a fave of ours! 💖

We collaborated with WeTransfer on "facebox" - an audio and video recording app that enables you to record yourself in your browser and download the recording. It's a super-simple way to get started with WeTransfer's APIs that allow you to send things from one place to another, or organize content onto visual boards.

Michael Käsdorf created "face-api-js-for-beginners". It's a remixable version of Jeremy Ellis' face-api.js starter app, which makes it easier to get started with face detection and face recognition in the browser.

And if you’re curious about using Magenta to make music with Machine Learning but don’t know where to start, "hello-magenta" is an interactive introduction by Google Software Engineer Monica Dinculescu.

The 90s brought us a lot of things... the Spice Girls, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Power Rangers, Tomb Raider, Hypercolor t-shirts, and Magic Eye.

For me, Magic Eye mostly meant staring cross-eyed at a picture for hours, yelling "it's not working!" I hope you had more luck with them though, as Glitch Design Engineer Tiffany Tseng has brought them back!

In "magic-eye" you can draw an image, click 'Show Magic Eye' and it'll be transformed into a "Magic Eye" picture (also known as a random dot stereogram!). Save the image and share it with friends.

Next up, we have a couple of creations by the Library of Congress' Innovator-in-Residence, Jer Thorp. Both help you explore the library's enormous collection through serendipitous connections.

'Library of Time' for example is a clock, and the numbers which tell you the time relate to the 25 million objects in the library's holdings. Every time you look at it, it's different!

And there's 'Library of Color' too. This one finds colorful words in the titles of objects in the collection and paints huge interactive rainbows that you can use to explore it.
