What if you could build your own version of Zoom or Google Hangouts? Using Glitch and OpenTok, the opportunity awaits you! Developer Advocate Garann Means wrote a helpful tutorial in Building a JavaScript Hotline with OpenTok and Node.js. It takes you through all the steps of creating an interactive video chat app on Glitch.

The idea behind this project is straightforward: if you have a question about, say, JavaScript (and don't we all), you can get connected with a JavaScript expert. They can walk you through all your questions in a live video chat. If you're an expert, you can sign up to get notified by text message when someone needs help. The app works in a browser, so there is no need to install any special software.

Best of all, you can remix it, throw in your OpenTok API keys and start coding your own features. We remixed this app and added a Glitch embed next to the video chat so you can code together on Glitch:

Nexmo + OpenTok + Glitch = Making Communication apps easy

Don't worry, you don't need to set up an entire telecommunications system by yourself. That's because OpenTok is doing most of the heavy lifting. Your Glitch app basically says, "hey, get me a video chat," and OpenTok sets it all up. The app itself is only about 200 lines of code, which primarily  tell OpenTok what to do.

OpenTok is part of Nexmo, Vonage’s API platform for messaging and voice. OpenTok has screen-sharing and recording capabilities as well. Build a Twitch-like app to show your screen, a video, and a live chat all at once. You can record it all so anyone can watch it later.

Nexmo's Developer Blog has more valuable blog posts that explain how to use OpenTok and other Nexmo APIs on Glitch. Each post tells you how they made it and includes a nifty Glitch app. And, just like any public Glitch app, if you're curious you can view the source code, or remix to build your own versions! Test one out and prototype apps with these amazing communications capabilities.

Video Chat With OpenTok on Glitch

Anyone can build the web with Glitch, and we’ve always been inspired by the XOXO community. Glitch Brings Appy Hour to XOXO

The same year Revision Path’s 300th episode featured Academy Award winning production designer Hannah Beachler (of , , and  fame), it also reached another milestone. A tremendously significant milestone, in fact: it is the first podcast to be included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Yes, that’s right: the  first podcast.

Since 2013, the indie podcast has featured the work of Black graphic designers, web designers, software developers, creative and art directors, illustrators, animators and other digital creatives. With its recent inclusion into the NMAAHC permanent collection, it becomes a testament to a few trends: the evolution of design, the continued rise of podcasts as a venue for discussion of arts and culture, and the growing public interest in how the design industry works.

Revision Path’s creator and host Maurice Cherry himself is a wealth of knowledge worthy of inclusion in national archives, so we asked him to answer a few questions to help us understand the cultural impact of design and how podcasting has changed since 2013.

August 2018 — I went with a group of friends (including some former guests on the show). We spent pretty much the whole day in the museum, viewing all the exhibits from the basement up to the top floor. It was great to not only take in all the culture and history, but to also be able to discuss it with other design professionals as well. It was truly a wonderful experience.

They are all professionals in design in their own unique way, and they are all Black — that’s the primary thing they have in common. The truth is that there’s a lot of diversity in the episodes that were chosen. There is gender diversity, age diversity, diversity in discipline, diversity in sexual orientation, and diversity in geographic location. When people listen to the episodes as a set, I guarantee that they will come away with knowledge about a wide array of information. The perspectives shared in these conversations really are a good display of what Revision Path is all about.

That is a great question. I certainly feel that the overall visibility and perception of Black designers in the design community has grown over the past six and a half years. I think Revision Path has played a  in that, but I certainly cannot take credit for it all. The guests on the show come from all walks of life from all over the world, and their work spans a wide range of design, tech, and other creative fields. When they are on the show and others listen and learn about them, it just spreads the word about the fact that Black designers are out here working, thriving, and making a difference in the world.

Podcasting has certainly gotten a lot more commercial over the years. I started podcasting in the early 2000s, so I have seen that big first flush of indie podcasting come about, as well as media companies and their podcasts. NPR, for example, created podcasts from several of their shows as far back as the mid-2000s. This second wave of podcasting, which I would say probably could be traced back to around the time of  and its big mainstream success in 2014, has brought more indie podcasters into the field, but major media outlets (TV, newspapers, etc.) have also stepped up their production and their output.

The technology (hardware and software) to record, edit, and produce podcasts has become a lot easier and more accessible, but the gap between indie podcasters and big media organizations is widening every day. The big media organizations have the resources to crank out high quality shows, and have a staff to support the marketing and distribution. Indie podcasters are often doing all that work themselves, or through hiring others to handle these services on a contract basis. And as I alluded to earlier, it has gotten a lot more commercial. There are lots of talk about sponsors and making money which might make some think of podcasting as some "get rich quick" scheme. And with dynamic ad insertion and other new tracking technologies, advertisers are getting more savvy about which shows they financially support in order to maximize a return on their investment.

What I think ends up happening then is that shows are created just for the sole purpose of making money, and not about telling stories or sharing information or connecting with a wider audience.

More interviews! Revision Path’s strength is its consistency, so we will continue having new episodes every Monday at 10am ET. Now that we have crossed 300 episodes, I have thought about having more of our past guests come back and talk about what has happened since their last interview. Huny Young, who has been on the show three times now, is a great example of someone who has evolved throughout her creative career, and it is so great to chart her creative journey from 2015 to 2017 to 2019.

I definitely want to do more of those kinds of interviews with past guests. Also, because Revision Path is very much an international show, I want more international guests! We have been fortunate to have guests from North America, the Caribbean, and throughout Europe, Africa, and Australia. I would love to talk to more Black designers in parts of Asia, as well as throughout South America.

I think we can all gain so much perspective from what our brothers and sisters throughout the diaspora are doing in design, and that is something that people don’t learn about in design school.

Indie podcast featuring Black designers joins the Smithsonian collection

Glitch is three things. It's a big vision, and to do all those things right we need the resources to deliver. So we're announcing today that we've raised $30M in venture capital funding from Tiger Global Management.

We've been bootstrapped for almost 20 years, so the decision to raise funding wasn't one we took lightly. We know that a lot of creative communities online lost their way after taking funding, and we thought a lot about that risk. But we don't intend to repeat such mistakes, so we've raised funds on our own terms.

We're fortunate to have an incredible team, founders that have built multiple successful companies, and experienced leadership, which meant we could take our time and seek out funding in a thoughtful way, finding partners who believed in the long-term vision of what we’re trying to build. (And it’s especially unusual that we went with a single investor for the entire round of funding, to keep things simple and make sure we’re all on the same page.)

We're confident our fund-raising will only be a positive, and here's the proof: we actually closed the funding last year. We didn't announce it right away so we could show you that it's going to be good, rather than just make empty promises.

Since then we've doubled-down on building a friendly and welcoming community that's changing the way the web is made. We've grown our team of talented folks to extend our lead building innovative features that creators and developers love. We've continued to put our values into practice, honoring our core principle of valuing people - whether that's community members or the people on our team. With pay transparency, climate leave, public inclusion stats, and our open-source employee handbook, we're not just trying to say the right things, we're following through on those words by turning them into policies and practices that are unprecedented for a company at our stage.

There's a lot more to do, and we're just a small but growing company that's competing with giants. Glitch Raises $30M Series A Round from Tiger Global

We're evolving "developer tools" into a creative and expressive platform that everyone can use to create the web. On Glitch, coding with friends is like working together in Google Docs–multiple people can work on the same project at the same time. There's no setup, and you can see changes live on the web as you type.

By radically lowering the barriers to creating with code, our creative community of millions of people has now made more than 2.5M apps. For context, that’s more than Apple’s App Store, though since people create on Glitch by remixing each other’s work, it’s not exactly an… apples-to-apples comparison. 😇

From useful tools that solve problems at work, to VR experiences, smart bots, and apps for important causes, the community on Glitch is creating the cutting-edge of the web.

Take Julius Tarng's "tokimeki-unfollow," it's the perfect app for tidying up your Twitter timeline. Decide whether each person you follow still sparks joy. If not, hit that unfollow button! As Samantha Cole writes in Vice, "if hell is other people, Twitter is a whole other kind of damnation. But after unfollowing 50 people… I can say that at least the meditative process of considering my connections sparked a little joy."

With "nelson" created by Arielle Vaniderstine, you can tailor the perfect playlist to how you're feeling right now. Specify the genre, tempo, popularity, and several more esoteric attributes from the valence to danceability. As The Verge put it, with Nelson you can "make yourself some half-human, half-algorithm cyborg playlists." Or perhaps you're more worried about your secret love of Enya getting out? Then Eric Lewis' "make-all-spotify-playlists-secret" is the app for you.

There are fun apps too, like "webcomicname-mashup". Created by Ravelry co-founder, Casey Forbes, it's an addictive generator for creating your own versions of Alex Norris' 'Oh No' comics. From reflections on our productivity-sapping obsession with gadgets to poignant comments on the state of discussions of identity and gender, the results can be en pointe.

Or maybe you've always wanted to create your own comic, except there's just one problem–you can't draw? Don't worry, the bots have your back. Monica Dinculescu's "magic-sketchpad" uses machine learning to complete your sketches for you.

While Aaron Z. Best's "FoodHype" food trend generator serves up novelty food titles that Food & Wine quipped "are the stuff of meat-sweat-induced fever dreams." A few clicks in and you'll be questioning whether they are actually fake foods or real clickbait headlines.

Of course, folks have created apps that help advance important causes too. Like "congress-tracker" by Jason Crane, which utilizes ProPublica's Congress API to make keeping up with bills and statements by members of Congress on gun violence easier. And Baratunde Thurston, the Emmy-nominated ex-producer of The Daily Show, created "livingwhileblack." It asks whether you can tell which headlines are real, highlighting the phenomenon of white people calling the police on black people simply living their lives.

Glitch's community also includes some of the biggest companies in Tech. Google's Material design team launched "material-theme-builder" on Glitch, which you can use to style and remix themeable components and create your own custom version of Material Design. Slack share template apps and tutorials using Glitch to make building bots easier than ever. While the Twitch dev team routinely live stream using Glitch on Twitch.

We're working with partners across industries, not just tech. Like teaming up with Discovery and MythBusters Jr. to transform their science-based TV episodes into interactive apps. Or working with the likes of Questlove, Adam Savage, and the publisher Andrews McMeel on several book launches.

But ultimately, what we're trying to do is enable everyone to create the web. It's easy to forget in this era of Unicorn startups and billion-dollar IPOs that many people got started on the web by tweaking the HTML of a GeoCities page or perfecting the CSS on their MySpace profile. Back then, people were almost as likely to make a web page as read one. Now though, things have changed. Most modern websites all look the same, and people spend almost all their time using just three apps. So it seems more important than ever to remind ourselves that the web is still a thing we can all make, not just something we consume.

We're proud to be enabling creativity with code like no tool has done before, and to be working alongside the most friendly, and thoughtful community on the internet.

Glitch Now Has More Apps than Apple's App Store - 2.5 Million of Them

We started out as Fog Creek Software, an independent tech company that always put people first. We pioneered remote-working and private offices for creative workers more than a decade ago. Now we're building the friendliest, most inclusive, and welcoming social platform on the internet.
Our approach begins with solid fundamentals. We're built with sustainability in mind, and that extends to the way we're funded too: We're independent, privately held, and transparent and open in our business model and processes. That gives us the freedom to make the best choices for the long-term interests of Glitch and our community.

Unlike other social networks, we've put the safety and health of our users first since day one. That means pro-actively considering vectors for abuse when we design new features. And we've hired community health engineers whose job is to think through the impact that product developments have on the community. The result is a healthy community by design. Oh, and we'll never tolerate hate speech - it's not actually complicated.

We're doubling-down on providing the best place to work in the entire tech industry. Each person has both private and collaborative workspaces. We respect working hours because we know our staff does their best work when they have work/life balance. Coworkers don't even @mention each other in Slack when they're not working, and we have almost no email.

But that's just where we start. Pay transparency is a cornerstone of how Glitch treats employees. We want staff to  they're being paid fairly. All job listings include a salary range, and we share salary ranges by role internally so that no-one has to worry that other folks are being paid differently for doing the same work. We respect everyone's contributions toward our goals regardless of their role, so executive pay is capped at 5X the lowest salary.

We don't want our staff to have to worry about their health either, or that of their family. That's why we've always offered complete health insurance for every employee. We provide great health insurance with a really high deductible and then we pay the entire deductible. There are unlimited sick days, and we have generous policies in place should folks need to take care of a sick family member.

While we're proud to be headquartered in New York City, about half of our employees are remote. We have a strong remote work culture and all of our meetings are online, regardless of who is attending, so everyone can contribute as well as each other. At the start of each meeting, we run an app, on Glitch of course, that picks out a note-taker. This is so that we each take turns keeping notes because we know that otherwise women or other underrepresented team members often feel unduly obligated to handle such tasks.

Inclusion efforts that aren't just platitudes

While we're off to a good start, there is a lot more work left to do. Like most tech companies that have been around for two decades, we used to be a really homogenous place. Unlike most tech companies, we admit that we screwed up and we're not making any excuses for it. Our inclusion efforts aren't just platitudes. We're making real changes to build a more inclusive culture.

It starts from the top - we have a CEO who's a vocal advocate for underrepresented workers in tech, and we've changed everything from our recruiting and ally skills training to the way we design our products, all with a goal of ensuring we're a place that's welcoming and supportive to everyone. And unlike most companies our size, we don't shy away from sharing diversity stats either.

We can't promise we won't make mistakes but we can promise to try and fix them. We aim to be on the inside what we hope to inspire on the outside. After all, it's impossible to trust a company if you know they don't practice what they preach. That's why we're committed to zero gaps between our stated and lived values. And that's why our employee handbook is public and open-source. It spells out how our company runs day-to-day, it's what we use to help new employees get up to speed, and what our employees refer to when they want to know about company policies.

Most people of conscience are rightly worried about the effect that tech companies are having on civil society and culture. But in response, few companies seem to be trying to always do the right thing. At Glitch, we take pride in being part of an organization that is still trying. And our community, partners, and industry colleagues seem delighted by such optimism. But most importantly, we want to prove that a group of people can still create a healthy community, a successful business, and have a meaningful impact on society, all while being ethically sound.

It's Possible to Build a Big, Important Tech Company That Is Ethical, Too

Glitch makes it easy to build, ship, and share apps on the web. A big part of how we make it so easy is by removing the technical barriers between you and creation. On Glitch, there are no servers or setup to worry about, you can collaborate on code in real-time, and changes are deployed to the web as you type.

Now, this should go without saying, but these days it’s important to be clear: on Glitch, you own your stuff. You can set whatever license you want, and there’s no lock-in keeping your code on Glitch. We don’t require any proprietary protocols or libraries so you can export your project and it will just work on other services without requiring any changes. When it comes to your code, you’re in control. And we want you to have that same freedom when it comes to tools too — that’s why we’re building Glitch to work with the developer tools you already use.

The extension enables real-time collaborative development of Glitch projects directly in VS Code. You can open Glitch projects and edit them using the VS Code editor. The changes you make are automatically deployed to the web just like on Glitch. In fact, any changes you make can be seen in the Glitch editor straight away too. So you’re able to collaborate on projects with friends and colleagues, whether you’re using VS Code or the Glitch editor. You can see when someone is active, and when any code has been selected or changed.

Rewind — look back through your code history, rollback changes, and see files as they were in the past with a diff.

Announcing Glitch for Visual Studio Code

Last month, Stack Overflow published the aggregated results from their annual Developer Survey. Capturing the opinions of folks who code from around the world, the survey is an important source of insights into the developer community. This year almost 90,000 developers shared their opinions about the jobs they have, the technologies they use, and where they see the industry going.

Today, Stack Overflow released the full data set. To make it more accessible, we've partnered with them and have created two example apps that you can use to explore the data and discover your own insights.

There are many things we can learn from a large, rich dataset like this - from exploring questions about remote work to those about developer salaries, or how companies can better engage with developers. In our example app, we dig into job and career satisfaction levels and how they differ by demographic factors.

The front-end app takes the form of a question, such as, 'how does [selected demographic group] feel about [selected topic]?' It makes use of Chart.js, a JavaScript library for making interactive charts and graphs. Don't worry if you're not already familiar with Chart.js - we have a tutorial that steps through a real, working project that you can use to get up to speed.

To begin creating your own app, we suggest you start by looking at how the data is organized – look through the results and schema on the back-end app. Then remix the front-end app to create your own data visualizations.

Once you've remixed the front-end app, you can begin to make it your own.

Edit script.js, style.css, and index.html to change the appearance of the app.

Chart.js is used in script.js to render a chart using data from the back-end app's database.

Reference the Chart.js docs and change the drawChart function in script.js to visualize the data using different types of graphs.

Try changing a topic in index.html to pull in data from a different question. For example, if you change line 86 from this:

    <option value="Hobbyist">about writing code as a hobby?</option>


    <option value="WorkLoc">about where they'd prefer to work?</option>


you'll get results on people's preferred work setting (home vs. office vs. coworking space).

You can reference the set of questions to get some ideas; just get the Column entry related to the question you're interested in, and set it as the value parameter in <option value="Hobbyist">. You don't need to change the text of the question to fetch the data, but it'll keep things organized if you label it appropriately.

Some suggested questions to explore include:

How much do developers of a given seniority make in country x?

How does organization size relate to use of containers/unit tests/how structured or planned the work is?

Is level of education related to job satisfaction?

How does being an under-represented minority in tech affect work experience?

Is there a correlation between having dependents and being structured at work?

Let's explore the survey results using our example app, which takes a deep-dive into job and career satisfaction levels by demographic factors.

In general, we can see that satisfaction levels are high among developers - 2 in 3 are slightly or very satisfied with their current job, and 3 in 4 are slightly or very satisfied with their careers. But if you begin to filter by factors like gender and race you see variations. In particular, those from minority groups express lower job and career satisfaction levels.

Satisfaction levels are highest among cis-gendered men and women. However, for people identifying as non-binary, genderqueer, or gender non-conforming, satisfaction levels are lower. While the majority are still satisfied, results are shifted towards lower satisfaction levels with 13% saying that they're slightly dissatisfied (compared to 11% overall) and 6% very dissatisfied (5% overall) with their career, for example. A similar trend can be seen when comparing career and job satisfaction levels among trans to cis-gendered folks too.

Job and career satisfaction levels differ when breaking results down by race as well. 36% of developers indicating they're White or of European descent respond that they're 'very satisfied' with their current job compared to 32% across all respondents, and have low scores across measures of dissatisfaction. Job satisfaction levels are generally lower for those identifying as Black or of African descent. 24% are very satisfied compared to 32% overall and were also more likely to be dissatisfied in their current job, with 17% choosing slightly dissatisfied (15% overall) and 10% very dissatisfied (7% overall). This trend continues across other racial minority groups, with a larger portion of Hispanic or Latino/Latina developers and Middle Eastern developers, for example, recording lower job and career satisfaction levels.

It's important to understand why satisfaction levels are lower for some groups of people, and results from other parts of the Developer Survey suggest some possible reasons.

Of course, non-demographic factors impact job satisfaction levels. Developers with the lowest job satisfaction by job type, for example, include academic researchers, educators, scientists, and designers, who are all on the lower end of average pay rates too. When it comes to factors impacting productivity, gender minority respondents are more likely to say that toxic work environments are an important factor. And in terms of job priorities, developers who belong to gender minorities in tech rank the office environment and company culture as their highest concern and are more likely to say the diversity of an organization is an important concern for them. Whereas many racial minorities prioritized opportunities for professional development higher than other groups, with 49% of developers of Black or African descent saying it's a priority for them compared to 44% overall, for example.

Feelings of impostor syndrome play a role in lower satisfaction levels too. When asked to evaluate their own competence for the kind of work they do and their years of experience, men, for example, are much more likely to say they are far or a little above average compared to responses from gender minorities, with men typically growing more confident much more quickly.

The Developer Survey results suggest some gradual positive change in things like gender and race representation in tech. But by exploring the data for job satisfaction levels by demographic factors in this example app, it becomes clear that those changes could be short-lived if we as an industry don't tackle lower satisfaction levels among minority groups.
